How do I find out when my MOT is due?

There are a few ways to find your MOT due date. The fastest is a free online reg check — you'll have your answer in under five seconds.

Three ways to find your MOT due date

⚡ Fastest — recommended
Check online by registration plate
Use MOTReminder or the government's official DVSA tool to look up your MOT due date instantly. All you need is your reg. No account, no login — completely free.
Option 2
Check your MOT certificate
When your car passes its MOT, the testing station issues a VT20 certificate (pass) or VT30 (failure). The expiry date is printed on the VT20. If you have the paperwork in your glovebox, that's your date.
Option 3
Look at the reminder disc (older vehicles)
Before 2015, garages issued a small reminder disc for your windscreen. These are no longer issued, but if your car is older you might still have one. It isn't an official document — always verify the date online.

When is an MOT due for a new car?

A brand new car doesn't need its first MOT until it's three years old. After that, MOTs are required every year. The due date will always be exactly one year after the previous MOT was passed.

Can I do my MOT early?

Yes — you can take your car for an MOT up to one calendar month before it's due without losing any time on your current certificate. If you do it earlier than that, your new expiry date is calculated from the test date, meaning you lose days from your existing MOT.

Don't rely on reminders from the government: The DVLA and DVSA do not send automatic MOT reminders. You're responsible for tracking your own due date. Use MOTReminder to get a free email alert before your MOT expires.
