What does the DVLA vehicle check show?

A DVLA vehicle enquiry check reveals key facts about any registered UK vehicle using just its registration plate — including tax and MOT status, make, colour, and fuel type.

What you can see from a DVLA check

The DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service (VES) — the same API that powers MOTReminder — returns the following information for any UK-registered vehicle:

MOT Status
Whether the vehicle currently holds a valid MOT
MOT Expiry Date
The exact date the current MOT runs out
Road Tax Status
Whether the vehicle is taxed or untaxed (SORN)
Tax Due Date
When the current vehicle excise duty expires
Make
The vehicle manufacturer (e.g. Ford, Toyota)
Colour
The registered body colour of the vehicle
Fuel Type
Petrol, diesel, electric, hybrid, etc.
Year of Manufacture
The year the vehicle was built

For full MOT test history including advisories and past failures, use the DVSA's separate MOT history service. For stolen, written off, or finance checks, you'll need a paid HPI-style vehicle history check from a third-party provider.
