Can I check through the DVSA directly?

Yes — the government's official MOT history service at check-mot-history.service.gov.uk also lets you check any vehicle's MOT status and history using a registration number. It's free to use and powered by the same DVSA data we use here.

What information will I see?

When you check your MOT expiry date online you'll typically see your current MOT status (valid or not valid), the exact expiry date, and — through DVSA's full history tool — a list of past MOT tests including any advisories or failures.

Tip: Your MOT expiry date is not the same as your road tax (vehicle excise duty) due date. Make sure you check both separately — both are shown when you run a check on MOTReminder.

What if my car is exempt from MOT?

Vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960 are exempt from the MOT test. Historic vehicles — those first registered more than 40 years ago — also became exempt in 2018. If your vehicle falls into either category, no MOT expiry date will show because none is required.
