Buying a Used Car

How do I check if a used car has a valid MOT?

Always check before you buy. Verifying a used car's MOT status takes ten seconds and is completely free — all you need is the registration plate.

How to check a used car's MOT

1
Note the registration plate
You can check any vehicle even before you've seen it in person — just ask the seller for the reg, or take it from the advert.
2
Enter it into MOTReminder
Type or paste the reg into the checker above. We query official DVLA and DVSA records in real time.
3
Check the MOT status and expiry date
You'll see whether the MOT is currently valid and when it expires. A car being sold with an expired MOT is a significant red flag — make sure you understand the implications before proceeding.
4
Check the full MOT history
For a deeper look — advisories, failures, mileage at each test — use the government's free DVSA MOT history tool at check-mot-history.service.gov.uk using the same reg plate.

Things to verify before buying

Does a valid MOT mean the car is in good condition?

Not necessarily. An MOT only confirms that the vehicle met the minimum roadworthy standard on the day it was tested. It doesn't guarantee reliability, and a car can develop faults the day after passing. An MOT is not a substitute for a full mechanical inspection, especially on older or high-mileage vehicles.

Tip: If a seller claims the car "just had a fresh MOT" but the DVSA history shows the test was borderline — lots of advisories, a failure before a same-day retest — treat that fresh MOT with caution rather than as a clean bill of health.
