MOT Guide

Is it free to check MOT history online?

Yes — checking a vehicle's MOT history is completely free. The government provides this data publicly at no cost. You should never need to pay to see basic MOT status or history.

Free ways to check

FREE
MOTReminder
Instant MOT status and expiry date by reg plate. Powered by official DVLA and DVSA data. Free, no account required.
FREE
DVSA MOT History Service (gov.uk)
The government's official tool at check-mot-history.service.gov.uk shows the full MOT test history for any vehicle — including mileage at each test, advisories, and failures. Free to use without registration.
FREE
DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service (gov.uk)
Shows tax status, MOT status, make, colour, fuel type and year. Free, no account required. Does not include full MOT test history.

What costs money?

Paid vehicle checks — sometimes called HPI checks — go beyond MOT history. They combine MOT data with finance checks, stolen vehicle markers, write-off records, number plate change history, and keeper counts. These are worth paying for when buying a used car privately, but for simply checking MOT status or history, free services are all you need.

Watch out: Some websites appear in search results advertising free MOT checks but ask for payment or subscription sign-up once you enter your reg. MOT history data is publicly available — if a site is asking you to pay just to see basic MOT status, leave and use a genuinely free service instead.
