Do new cars need an MOT?
No — brand new cars don't need an MOT straight away. You get a three-year window before the first test is due. But the clock starts from the original registration date, not when you bought it.
When does a new car need its first MOT?
In the UK, a car requires its first MOT when it turns three years old. The due date is calculated from the vehicle's original registration date — the date it was first registered with the DVLA, which you'll find on the V5C logbook.
After that first test, an MOT is required every year without exception.
Important: If you're buying a used car that's close to or just over three years old, it may already need an MOT — even if it feels "nearly new" to you. Always check before you drive it away.
What if I bought a nearly-new used car?
The three-year exemption is based on when the car was first registered, not when you personally bought it. A two-year-old nearly-new car will need its first MOT one year after you get it. A car that's already three years old on the day you buy it needs an MOT before you can legally drive it on public roads.

Are there any other exemptions?
A small number of vehicle types are exempt from MOT testing regardless of age. These include vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1960, and historic vehicles first registered more than 40 years ago (which became exempt in 2018). Most vehicles on UK roads don't fall into these categories.
Vehicles with a valid Ministry of Defence registration, some agricultural vehicles, and certain specialist types also have different rules — but for the overwhelming majority of cars, the standard three-year rule applies.
What happens if I miss the first MOT?
Once your car turns three, driving it without a valid MOT is illegal. You can be fined up to £1,000, your insurance may be invalidated, and police can seize the vehicle. The only exception is driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment — and even then your tax must be valid.
Tip: You can book your MOT up to a month before the due date and keep the same anniversary expiry date. So if your car turns three in February, you can get it tested in January without losing any time on your MOT.
