MOT Guide

Can I MOT my car early?

Yes — you can get your MOT up to one calendar month before the due date, and you won't lose a single day. Your new MOT will still run from the original expiry date, not the test date.

How the one-month early rule works

The DVSA allows you to present your car for an MOT up to one calendar month before its current expiry date. If it passes, the new MOT certificate is backdated to run from the day your old one would have expired — so you keep your anniversary date and don't lose any time.

Example

Current MOT expiry 15 March 2025
Earliest you can test 15 February 2025
You test on 28 February 2025
New MOT expiry 15 March 2026 ✓

Getting tested on 28 February doesn't push the expiry to 28 February next year — it stays at 15 March. You get the full 12 months from your original date.

Why would I test early?

The most common reason is convenience — garages are often cheaper and less busy outside the January and March peak periods. If your MOT is due in a particularly busy month, testing a few weeks early can save you time and sometimes money.

It's also useful if you're going on a long trip and want peace of mind that your car is roadworthy before you go, or if your circumstances make it difficult to get to a garage in a specific window.

What if I test more than a month early?

If you present your car for an MOT more than one calendar month before the expiry date, the new MOT will run for 12 months from the test date — not from the old expiry date. You'll effectively lose the remaining time on your current MOT. This is rarely a good idea unless your car has no current MOT at all.

Watch out: Some garages may not flag this. If you're unsure whether you're within the one-month window, check your current expiry date first before booking.

What if my car fails the early MOT?

Your existing MOT certificate remains valid until its original expiry date. A failed test doesn't void your current MOT — you can drive away (unless the failure is a dangerous defect) and arrange repairs before retesting. You're not obligated to have the repairs done at the same garage.

Tip: MOTReminder will email you a reminder before your MOT is due, so you always know when to book — and whether you're in the one-month early window.
