MOT Basics

How old does a car have to be before it needs an MOT?

Most cars need their first MOT on the third anniversary of their registration date. After that, an MOT is required every year. There's no grace period — the day after it expires, driving is illegal.

A car needs its first MOT when it turns three years old, calculated from the date it was first registered — not the date it was manufactured or the date you bought it. From that point, you'll need a valid MOT at all times to drive legally on UK roads.

How the three-year rule works

The clock starts from the vehicle's original registration date, which is recorded by the DVLA. If your car was first registered on 14 March 2022, its first MOT is due on 14 March 2025. You can check any vehicle's first MOT due date — and its current status — using the free MOTReminder checker above.

You can book the test up to one month (minus a day) before the due date without losing any of that time. So if your MOT expires on 14 March, you could have it tested as early as 15 February and your new certificate would still run until 14 March the following year.

Vehicles that are exempt

🚗
Cars under three years oldNew vehicles don't need an MOT until the third anniversary of their registration date. There's nothing to book or check until then.
🏛️
Vehicles over 40 years oldCars, motorcycles, and light goods vehicles first manufactured before 1 January 1960 (rolling threshold) are exempt from the annual MOT requirement — though they must still be roadworthy.
🔒
SORNed vehiclesA vehicle subject to a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) doesn't need an MOT — but it also cannot be driven on public roads until both the SORN is cancelled and a valid MOT is obtained.

No grace period: Unlike some countries, the UK has no grace period after an MOT expires. The day it runs out, driving the vehicle on a public road is illegal — unless you're driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment and the vehicle is not in a dangerous condition.

What happens if you miss it?

Driving without a valid MOT is a criminal offence. You could face a fine of up to £1,000 and your insurance may be void. The police have automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems that flag vehicles with no valid MOT in real time — you don't need to be stopped for a separate offence to be caught.

Good to know: You can book an MOT up to 28 days before it expires without losing any MOT time. Book early — don't wait until the expiry date.
