Why didn't I get a reminder when my MOT expired?
Because there is no automatic system. In the UK, nobody is required to notify you when your MOT is due — not the government, not your garage, and not your insurer. If you didn't sign up for a reminder service, you simply won't get one.
The most common reasons you didn't get notified
Does the DVLA or DVSA contact you automatically?
No. The DVLA sends vehicle tax renewal reminders by post, but it does not send MOT reminders. The DVSA manages MOT testing and does operate a free reminder service — but only to vehicles whose owners have specifically opted in. Most people never do, and so most people never get an official reminder.
Important: Driving with an expired MOT is illegal and can invalidate your car insurance. You can be fined up to £1,000. The fact that you didn't receive a reminder is not a legal defence — it is your responsibility to ensure your MOT is valid.
My MOT has already expired — what do I do now?
If your MOT has lapsed, you cannot legally drive the vehicle on public roads — with one exception: you may drive directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment. Book an MOT as soon as possible. Once the test is passed, you'll be legal again and can also renew your vehicle tax if needed.
