MOT Reminders

Does the DVSA send MOT reminder emails?

Yes — but only if you've signed up. The DVSA won't automatically notify you when your MOT is due. Their free reminder service exists, but you have to opt in yourself, and most drivers never do.

How the DVSA reminder service works

The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) operates a free reminder service through gov.uk. Once registered, it will contact you around a month before your MOT is due — but the system is entirely opt-in. Your details are not collected automatically.

1
Go to the DVSA reminder sign-up on gov.uk
Search for "MOT reminder" on gov.uk or visit the Vehicle Enquiry Service. You'll need your vehicle registration number.
2
Enter your reg plate and contact details
You can choose to receive reminders by email, text message, or both. You'll need to provide a valid email address or UK mobile number.
3
Receive your reminder before the due date
The DVSA sends a reminder approximately four weeks before your MOT expires. You'll receive one reminder per vehicle per year.

DVSA reminders vs MOTReminder

Both services are free. The main difference is convenience — MOTReminder doesn't require you to navigate gov.uk or create any kind of account. Just enter your reg plate and email address on the homepage.

MOTReminder
motreminder.app
Enter your reg and email on the homepage. No account, no login, no navigation required. Also shows your current MOT status and expiry date instantly.
DVSA Reminder Service
gov.uk
Free official service. Requires sign-up through the gov.uk Vehicle Enquiry Service. Sends email or text reminders approximately four weeks before your MOT expires.

What about the DVLA — do they send reminders?

No. The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) manages vehicle registration and tax, but MOT testing falls under the DVSA. The DVLA does send vehicle tax renewal reminders by post, but they do not send MOT reminders. The two agencies are often confused — they are separate organisations with different responsibilities.

Quick summary: DVLA handles tax, registration, and driving licences. DVSA handles MOT testing, driving tests, and vehicle standards. Only the DVSA has a reminder service for MOTs, and only if you've signed up.
