Does a speed camera check MOT?

Not directly — but it depends on the type of camera. Standard speed cameras only capture speeding. ANPR cameras, including many average speed systems, check your MOT status automatically every time they read your plate. The distinction matters.

Camera types — which ones check MOT?

🟡
Gatso (rear-facing flash camera)
No MOT check
The classic yellow roadside box. Captures speeding only — triggered when a vehicle exceeds the speed limit. Does not read plates against the MOT or insurance database. Passing one without speeding leaves no record.

Truvelo (forward-facing camera)
No MOT check
Another speed-only camera. Captures front-on images for red light and speed enforcement. Does not query the MOT database as part of its standard operation.

Average speed cameras (SPECS / HADECS)
May check MOT
These systems use ANPR technology to read your plate at multiple points and calculate your average speed. Because they use ANPR, they can — and in some locations do — cross-reference plates against the MOT and insurance databases. Not all average speed systems are configured to do this, but the capability exists.
🔵
Dedicated ANPR cameras
Checks MOT
Fixed ANPR units — found on motorways, major A-roads, town centres, and at police checkpoints — are specifically designed to check every plate against the DVSA MOT database, DVLA tax records, and police intelligence systems. A lapsed MOT is flagged automatically and can trigger an enforcement response.
🚔
Police patrol car ANPR
Checks MOT
Police vehicles equipped with roof-mounted or bumper-mounted ANPR cameras check the status of every plate they pass in real time. If your MOT is lapsed, the officer is alerted before you've even realised you've been scanned.

What happens if an ANPR camera flags your MOT?

If a dedicated ANPR camera flags your vehicle for a lapsed MOT, the alert is fed to a control centre or nearby patrol unit. An officer may then be directed to intercept your vehicle, or in some cases an enforcement notice may be issued by post to the registered keeper's address.

💷
Fixed Penalty Notice — up to £1,000
The standard penalty for driving without a valid MOT. Issued at the roadside or sent to the registered keeper by post. No licence points are added.
🔑
Vehicle seizure
Police have powers to seize a vehicle confirmed to be without a valid MOT. Reclaiming it involves impound fees on top of the fine, plus getting a valid MOT first.

Average speed cameras are expanding. The UK's average speed camera network has grown significantly in recent years. As these systems are upgraded, more are being connected to the DVSA database. A route that didn't check MOT status last year may do so now.

Can you get a ticket in the post for no MOT?

Yes — it is possible for enforcement notices to be sent to the registered keeper based on ANPR reads, without an officer physically stopping the vehicle. The registered keeper is responsible for ensuring the vehicle has a valid MOT, regardless of who was driving.

The key takeaway: It is not just about speed cameras. The UK has an extensive ANPR network operating independently of speed enforcement. Assuming a camera is "only" checking your speed is increasingly inaccurate — and a costly assumption if you're wrong.
