Can I book an MOT online?
Yes — and you almost certainly should. Booking your MOT online takes a few minutes, guarantees your slot, and typically saves you 20–40% compared to walk-in pricing at the same garage.
How online MOT booking works
The process is the same whether you go through a national chain or a comparison site:
1
Enter your postcode and vehicle reg
Most booking tools use your reg to confirm the vehicle class and pull up available garages near you. Class 4 covers standard cars — vans and larger vehicles may have different options.
2
Choose a garage, date, and time
You'll see live availability — pick a slot that works for you. Morning slots midweek (Tuesday to Thursday) tend to have more availability and sometimes lower promotional pricing.
3
Pay upfront and get your confirmation
You'll receive a booking reference by email. Keep this — you'll need it at the garage. Some garages allow free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before the appointment.
4
Turn up and hand over your keys
Arrive at your booked time. You don't need to bring your V5C (log book) — only your booking reference. The MOT itself typically takes 45–60 minutes.
Where to book an MOT online
One of the UK's largest MOT booking platforms — aggregates prices from thousands of garages so you can compare independently. Filter by rating, distance, and price. Particularly strong for finding well-reviewed independents alongside national chains.
Similar to BookMyGarage — enter your details, compare quotes from local garages, and book in a few clicks. Useful if you also need other work doing alongside the MOT.
Halfords runs regular online MOT promotions — sometimes as low as £29.99. Their booking system is straightforward and they have hundreds of locations across the UK. Best value when a deal is running; standard pricing is less competitive.
Kwik Fit has one of the densest garage networks in the UK. Online prices are significantly lower than walk-in, and they offer free cancellation. A reliable option if a comparison site doesn't surface anything better nearby.
Do I need to bring anything when I arrive?
For an MOT you do not need to bring your V5C (log book), your insurance certificate, or any other documents. All you need is your booking reference and your car. The tester accesses the DVSA database directly to record the result — your paper certificate is no longer issued; pass and fail results are stored digitally.
After the test: Your MOT result is recorded on the DVSA database automatically. You can check it instantly at MOTReminder using your reg. The garage will also give you a printed VT20 (pass) or VT30 (fail) sheet, but the digital record is the one that counts.
Can I book an MOT for the same day?
It depends on the garage and how busy they are. National chains often have same-day slots available via their online systems — especially on quieter midweek days. Comparison sites typically show real-time availability so you'll know immediately if same-day is an option near you. If you're in a hurry, it's worth checking online before calling around.
Check when your MOT is due first
Know your expiry date before you book — so you can time it right and get the best slot.
