Garages & Booking

Can a dealership do my MOT?

Yes — many franchised dealerships are fully authorised to carry out MOT tests. But authorisation is the key word: not every dealership holds it, and you are never obligated to use one.

A dealership can legally carry out your MOT provided it holds DVSA Authorised Examiner status and operates a designated MOT bay. There is no requirement to use the dealership that sold you the car. You are free to book your MOT anywhere that is DVSA-authorised — independent garage, national chain, or dealership.

Dealership MOT: the pros and cons

Brand-specific expertiseFranchised dealerships employ technicians trained specifically on that manufacturer's vehicles. For complex or newer cars — particularly EVs and hybrids — this can be an advantage.
Manufacturer warranty protectionSome manufacturer warranties require servicing and maintenance to be carried out by an approved dealer. Using a franchised dealer for your MOT alongside a service can keep warranty claims straightforward.
Genuine parts availabilityIf your car fails its MOT and repairs are needed, a franchised dealer has immediate access to genuine OEM parts — which can be important for certain vehicles or warranty conditions.
Usually more expensiveDealership MOT prices are typically higher than independent garages or national chains. You will rarely find a discounted online deal at a franchised dealer comparable to Halfords Autocentre or Kwik Fit pricing.
Higher repair labour ratesIf your car fails, repair costs at a dealership are often significantly higher than at an independent garage. You are under no obligation to have repairs done there after an MOT failure.
Not all dealerships are authorisedSome dealerships — particularly smaller or used-car sites — do not hold DVSA authorisation and cannot issue a valid MOT certificate. Always check before booking.

How do I check if a dealership is DVSA-authorised?

You can verify any garage or dealership using the DVSA's official MOT station finder at check-mot.service.gov.uk. Search by postcode to see every authorised testing station nearby, along with their VTS (Vehicle Testing Station) number. If a dealership does not appear in the results, it is not authorised to issue MOT certificates.

Note: A valid MOT certificate must always be issued via the DVSA's national database. An MOT carried out at an unauthorised site — even a large, well-known dealership — is not legally valid.

Do I have to use the dealership that sold me my car?

No. There is no legal obligation to return to the selling dealer for your MOT at any point. The MOT test is a government roadworthiness check — it can be carried out at any DVSA-authorised station in the UK, regardless of make, model, or where you bought the vehicle.

The same applies to manufacturer servicing requirements: under UK competition law, you can have your car serviced at any competent garage without voiding your manufacturer warranty, as long as the correct parts and service schedules are followed. This is known as block exemption.

Is a dealership MOT worth the extra cost?

For most standard petrol or diesel cars, a dealership MOT offers no practical benefit over a well-reviewed independent garage or national chain — the test itself follows the same DVSA standards regardless of where it is carried out. The MOT pass or fail criteria are identical everywhere.

Where a dealership may be worth considering: newer electric or hybrid vehicles with complex battery management systems, cars still under a manufacturer warranty with specific maintenance clauses, or vehicles with known brand-specific issues a specialist would be better placed to assess.

Watch out for upselling: Dealerships often combine MOTs with service packages or recommend additional work. You are never obligated to have advisory items repaired at the same garage. Get a second quote for any significant repair before agreeing to it.
